WHO WE ARE

The inaugural edition of the Black Snapper International Film Festival is the first major international student film festival held in Australia. It is in partnership with Macquarie University’s Creative Documentary Research Centre (CDRC).

Run by students for students, we aim to showcase, foster and celebrate the talents of young, emerging filmmakers from diverse backgrounds. From the empowering and challenging, to the funny and off-beat, we want to show the immense creativity of young storytellers locally, nationally and globally.

The festival is named with respect to the Wallumai, or Black Snapper Totem of the Wallumattagal people of the Dharug Nation, the Traditional Owners of the land Macquarie University stands on.

Black Snapper acknowledges Australia’s First Nations People as the Traditional Custodians of the land, and pay respect to the Wallumattagal people, the Traditional Custodians of the land on which Macquarie University stands. We also honour the storytelling and culture of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities across Australia and pay our respects to all elders past, present and future.
